The Gurjar Hindu Union (GHU) is a long established minority ethnic led charitable organisation serving Crawley, a town based in the South East of England, near Gatwick Airport.
The organisation focuses on the Indian community in serving their needs and helping to integrate them into mainstream society. GHU also looks to share the rich cultural and spiritual history of India more widely through common inter-community experiences.
GHU is a volunteer led organisation which has established itself as a well run, sustainable organisation. Through prudent financial management and funds raised from the community it serves, GHU owns a building from where it runs its community centre.
The needs of the community it serves now demand that GHU move to larger premises and gradually make the step change to employing staff. A suitable site with the requisite planning permission has been identified.
The capital project will cost £3.5 million and construction work is due to start in 2007. GHU will raise £1.89 million from personal donations and the sale of its present site. A fundraising plan is in place for the remaining £1.61 million.
Once complete the Sanatan Mandir and Community Centre will be the first of its kind in the South East. It will provide a holistic range of activities serving not only the needs of the Indian community but also sharing its rich history, culture, and its facilities with the wider Crawley community.
Located almost halfway between the capital and the coast Crawley has grown far beyond the design parameters laid down in the late ‘40’s (that’s the late 1940’s). Mostly due to the massive expansion of Gatwick Airport but also with a lot of encouragement from the Crawley Council
